You guys, I’m getting so many questions about how to start a mom blog! I’m so excited that you are considering taking this leap for yourself! I feel like starting a blog is such an awesome way that moms can express themselves, make some extra cash, and build something of your very own. To make it easier on you, I created this step by step guide to starting a blog.
Starting my blog here at A Life In Labor was one of the things I am most proud of. I’m doing this all by myself. I built this blog from the ground up. From the name to the content, it was all my dream. It still blows me away that it’s even real. Starting a blog has been so fulfilling! Not to mention, I don’t mind the extra cash flow every month!
I’ll admit that starting a blog was scary. It was a leap that I had to decide to take. When I got it in my head that this is what I wanted to do, I had to decided that it was what I was going to do and just GO FOR IT.
You can start your own mom blog too!
I want the decision to start a blog to be easy for you. So, I created a step-by-step guide for you to follow so that you can start your blog today! You don’t need to be tech-savvy, you don’t need to know code, and you don’t have to know what you’re doing. Blogging is a community. We all help each other out when we can.
Once you’ve read this post on how to start a blog and you’ve decided that you’re ready to move forward and ACTUALLY DO IT, keep reading. I’ll walk you through it step by step.
Make Your First Big Decision
1. They have outstanding Uptime
If your blog goes down, you’re losing views, subscribers, and MONEY. To have your blog go down is one of the worst things that can happen to the health of your blog. Choosing the right host will help prevent that from happening to you. SiteGround has an Uptime of 99.99% Whaaat?! Yes. 99.99%.
Personally, my blog has never been down with SiteGround. Knock on wood.
2. Their customer service is incredible
I have needed to contact SiteGround’s customer service a few times for things here and there that I needed assistance with. IT WAS SO EASY. They don’t make you wait for a response for hours or work your way through an automated system before you get help from a real person.
You get a live person to chat with right away! Their phone or live chat service is available to you 24/7. I could not believe how quickly and easily problems were resolved for me by the SiteGround customer service. Thank goodness for them. Seriously.
3. It’s totally affordable!
Let me guess. You haven’t started your blog yet because you are afraid of the cost? You’re worried that blogging is an expensive hobby? Well, I have good news for you.
You can start your blog for $3.95 (a 60% discount!!) a month RIGHT HERE.
Seriously? Yes, seriously. You’re basically robbing them. For $3.95 a month, you can start your blog and get:
- One Website
- 10GB Web Space
- 10,000 Visits Monthly
- 24/7 Technical support
- Unlimited Emails
- Free Setup & Transfer
- Free Daily Backup
- and more!
Not to mention, there is a 30 day money back guarantee. I am really not seeing the issue here. If you have the calling to start a blog then do it.
Let’s Get Started With SiteGround
Step 1: Choose A Plan
You have three options when choosing a hosting plan.
If you want to start small with the StartUp plan, it will only cost $3.95 a month through this link. It includes all of the basics that you need to start up your blog and it’s a totally fine option.
Even when I had ZERO experience blogging, had no idea what I was doing, and was just starting out, I still didn’t feel like it was enough for what I knew my potential was.
This is the plan that I went with when I first started my blog. It’s $5.95 a month (considering my 60% discount) and includes a few extras.
First of all, it accommodates 25,000 monthly visits. If you are passionate and motivated to make money blogging, you can reach this milestone fairly quickly. I knew that I wasn’t going to give up until I reached this amount of monthly views so I jumped on board with this plan right away. I’m so glad I did, because I surpassed 25,000 view in my third month of active blogging.
In addition to all of the features included in the StartUp plan, the GrowBig plan includes:
- Hosting for multiple sites
- 20GB Web Space
- Premium Support
- The Super Cacher to help your site run faster
Are you taking charge of this whole blogging thing and you’re confident that you will ROCK at it? Go for the GoGeek Plan that accommodates 100,000 monthly visits and only costs $11.95 a month.
With the GoGeek Plan, you get all of the features in the GrowBig Plan plus:
- 30GB Web Space
- 100,000 Visits Monthly
- All of the Geeky Advanced Features
Which one will you choose?
Step 2: Pick Your Domain Name
Your domain name is SO stinking important. Pick something that you want to represent your blogging identity forever. It should be short and sweet, and nothing confusing or hard to spell. You want people to remember your website in case they want to come looking for you again later.
After choosing your plan, you will be prompted to register a new domain name. If your domain is already taken, it won’t let you continue. Your domain has to be original and completely yours! If you already have a domain that you bought somewhere else, just click “I already have a Domain” and continue.
Step 3: Complete all account and payment information
Enter your account information on the next step. Make sure you remember your email and password that you enter! You’ll need this every time when you sign in to SiteGround. But don’t get confused. Signing into SiteGround is not the same thing as signing into WordPress / the backend of your blog. We will get there soon.
Make sure you’ve chosen the correct plan that you want and change the time period based on how much you want to spend right now. You’ll be paying for the whole time period that you choose – not month by month. Longer time periods always saves you money in the end though. Your 60% discount that you get for using this link won’t apply when you renew down the road. So if you know that you will want to continue blogging for more than 12 months, choosing more time will get you the discount for longer.
If you are interested in some of the Extra Services that SiteGround provides, you can choose them here in this screen as well. It’s smart to add on domain privacy for your protection and I certainly added the SG Site Scanner so that I was always in the know about how my site was doing, but they aren’t required.
Thats it! Check the box that says you agree to the terms and conditions and then click “Pay Now.”
You did it! Congrats, Mama, your blog is officially self hosted. Let’s keep going so that you can start writing ASAP!
Install WordPress to Start Blogging
I can walk you through most of the process for getting WordPress installed, but if you’d rather get one-on-one help, go ahead and click on “Support” and then “Live Chat” to get your SiteGround team to help you set it up through live chat. Otherwise, just follow along.
Step 1: Log into SiteGround if you aren’t logged in already
Remember that email and password that I told you to write down somewhere? Here is where you need it!
Step 2: Go to cPanel
Once you’re logged in, click on My Accounts>Go to cPanel
You’ll get a pop-up asking to access you cPanel securely. Click Proceed.
Step 3: Install WordPress
Scroll down to the “Autoinstallers” section and click on “WordPress“.
Click the blue “Install” button and then continue to follow the prompts that follow. You’ll have to fill out your Site Name, Site Description, username, password, email addressed, and preferred language. Once everything is filled out, Click “Install” once again.
Write down the username and password that you choose! This is the username and password that you will be logging into every day to access the backend of your blog.
Let’s start using it now!
Step 4: Log in to YOUR NEW BLOG!
You’ve officially done it. You started a blog. Go to http://YOURDOMAINNAME.com/wp-admin to log in and get started with the fun stuff.
Look around and get really familiar with what you’re looking at because you are going to spend SO MUCH TIME here. This is where you’ll do your writing and publishing. It’s your new home. Welcome!
Step 5: Install A New Theme
Right now your blog is as basic as it gets. You probably have a free wordpress theme installed. If you’re asking me, this has to change. I’m a huge advocate for investing in a theme that can really help your blog take off.
I love, love love, Restored 316 and their beautiful, responsive, well-made WordPress themes. The best part is, they are completely customizable and they come with amazing support from their team.
You’re going to need the Genesis Framework in order to use any of their themes. Download it here. Once you have the Genesis Framework, you will be able to download and install the theme that fits best for your brand and start customizing it right away.
You are going to love it. Customizing my site and making it exactly what I want gives me the same thrill as decorating my house. I can do it all day long. It feels so personal and so satisfying.
Ok, You’ve Done It
That’s really it to get your blog started. Now the biggest thing that you have to do is write content and start making your blog unique and “so you” with branding. Get really good, informative, original, content up on your blog regularly and you will start to see things come together.
If you want to do one very important thing to get the personalization started, I would suggest that it be creating your brand logo with PicMonkey. As for everything else, it takes time. As you get more posts published, you will have more images to work with, more links to include, and more ideas for where to take your brand.
Your blog is brand new right now and needs time to develop into what you want it to be. Hang in there and GET EXCITED because now you’re a blogger. I can’t wait to see your new creation. Let me know how it’s going and if you need anything. I’m always here to help.
